Square Enix Dev Yoshi-P Says Final Fantasy 6, 8, and 9 Remakes Would Probably Have to Be Released in Four or Even Five Installments
At the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, series producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida and Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the future of the franchise, dampening hopes that Final Fantasy 6, 8, or 9 might receive remakes in the style of the FF7 trilogy. Yoshida explained that these games are so large in scope that, following the FF7 model, they would likely need to be split across four or five separate instalments to do them justice, echoing similar concerns raised previously about the sheer scale of such projects.
Hamaguchi, who cited Final Fantasy 6 as his reason for entering the games industry, said he is regularly asked about remaking it but always has to deny any plans. This mirrors comments made in 2024 by original FF6 director Yoshinori Kitase, who estimated a comparable remake could take around 20 years, roughly double the development time of the FF7 Remake trilogy, given the game's depth and vast cast of characters. Hamaguchi also praised the dedication of the team that stayed with him through over a decade of work on the FF7 trilogy, noting that assembling similar teams for further ambitious remakes would not be simple, while separate comments during the panel sparked fan speculation about a potential Final Fantasy 17.

- Echoes 2024 estimate that an FF6 remake could take 20 years.
- Hamaguchi remains focused on FF7 Revelation, not new remakes.
