BBC Studios has begun recruiting a new chief for its Natural History Unit (NHU), the acclaimed team behind Planet Earth III and The Americas, as current head Jonny Keeling moves into a new Creative Director role. Keeling will stay in his present post until the handover in 2027, ensuring continuity while a successor is found. The move marks a significant leadership shift for one of the BBC's most prestigious production arms, whose output shapes wildlife broadcasting globally.

Keeling has led the NHU since 2021, overseeing hits including Frozen Planet II, Asia, Mammals, Kingdom, Dynasties II and The Americas with Tom Hanks. In his new role, he will focus on programme-making and mentoring, working alongside veteran Creative Director Mike Gunton and remaining part of the senior leadership team. BBC Studios' Kate Ward praised his contribution, while upcoming NHU projects include Blue Planet III, Hidden Planet, Green Planet II and Lion.
