A Florida judge has ordered Donald Trump to provide financial records to the BBC in its defence against his $10 billion defamation lawsuit. The ruling matters because Trump alleges that a BBC Panorama documentary caused reputational and financial harm, making evidence of any claimed losses central to the case.

The dispute concerns a 2024 Panorama programme that combined excerpts from Trump’s 6 January 2021 speech, an edit the BBC has acknowledged gave a mistaken impression of a direct call for violence. Trump is seeking $10 billion (£7.5 billion), while the BBC has challenged the lawsuit and says it needs the records to assess his claimed damages; its lawyers said it had produced 87,000 pages, compared with 735 pages from Trump’s side.
