WhatsApp now supports encrypted calls on the web
WhatsApp has launched encrypted calling through its web interface, meaning users can now make and receive audio and video calls without installing a desktop app. The update, which Meta is rolling out gradually, brings the browser experience closer to parity with the mobile and desktop apps and removes a key limitation that previously forced users onto dedicated software for calls.
The web version supports both one-on-one and group calls with no time limits, and retains familiar features such as screen sharing, reactions, favourites and call history, all while remaining end-to-end encrypted. Additional updates include the ability to transfer calls seamlessly between devices, a waiting room for group calls with "Require approval to join" enabled, background noise reduction, and faster HD video streaming.
In short
- WhatsApp calls now work directly in web browsers, no app needed.
- New features include call transfer between devices and a group call waiting room.
- Rollout is gradual, with encryption and no time limits maintained.
Explained simply
WhatsApp is a messaging application owned by Meta that connects billions of people to send messages and make calls over the internet rather than using traditional phone networks. The service is known for its emphasis on privacy through end-to-end encryption, a security measure that scrambles communications so only the sender and recipient can read or hear them.
In addition to mobile phone apps, WhatsApp offers a version that runs in web browsers, allowing users to access their messages from a computer without installing separate software. However, this browser version has not previously supported voice or video calling, meaning users wanting to call needed to use their phone or a desktop application instead.
For many users, having calling available only on phones or desktop apps has created a practical inconvenience when they want to conduct all their WhatsApp communications in one place. Extending calling to the browser removes this limitation and brings the browser experience more in line with the phone and desktop versions.
