A video filmed during a family beach outing at Newport Beach, California, captured a great white shark breaching the water just yards from a boogie boarder who was completely unaware of the animal's presence. The clip, taken early on a Saturday morning, has drawn attention during Shark Week for how close the shark came to a swimmer without anyone on the scene realising at the time, underlining how frequently sharks may pass unnoticed near popular beaches.

The footage was captured by Soaren Stevenson, a California-based college ministry leader, whose family had been filming on the beach and only discovered what they had recorded when they reviewed the video hours later. Stevenson told Fox News Dig the group had been "praying" for something remarkable to happen while filming, joking it would be "super-cool" if a "miracle" occurred, not realising a shark encounter would be caught on camera. No injuries were reported, and the boogie boarder appeared unaware of the shark throughout the incident.
