BG3 third-person camera mod completely changes how you play Baldur’s Gate 3

Polygon · 4 hours ago

A new fan-made mod for Baldur's Gate 3 called True Third-Person Camera has introduced an over-the-shoulder camera view to the RPG, offering players a more cinematic, immersive alternative to the game's default top-down tactical and free-movement camera options. Developed by a modder known as Relysia, the mod has proven hugely popular since its release, with many players saying it makes the well-known world of Faerûn feel like a new game, though it has also drawn criticism from purists who feel it strays from Larian Studios' original vision.

The mod tethers the camera just above and behind the player's character, similar to third-person viewpoints in games such as Dragon Age or The Witcher, and lets players adjust angle, zoom, height and tracking speed via an in-game configuration menu. It automatically switches to the tactical top-down view during combat, though players can toggle back to the close-up perspective with a single keypress. Installing it requires several supporting mods, including the Script Extender, Mod Configuration Menu and WASD Character Movement tools, and it has been out for under two weeks, with its creator already releasing updates and video guides. Reaction online has been largely enthusiastic, though some players, including one X user quoted in the article, have called the change "sacrilegious".

  • New mod adds true over-the-shoulder camera view to Baldur's Gate 3.
  • Mod auto-switches to tactical view in combat, adjustable via menu.
  • Popular with many fans, but criticised by some as against Larian's vision.
