Peter Gabriel has released a new nine-minute single called One By One, which brings back Mozo, a fictional outsider character he has used throughout his career, as part of the world of his recent i/o album and its companion oi material. The track matters to long-time fans as it explicitly links Gabriel's current creative project to a recurring persona from his earliest solo work, giving continuity to a musical narrative he has developed since the 1970s.

Mozo first appeared on Gabriel's 1977 debut album, in songs such as Here Comes the Flood and Down the Dolce Vita, and returned on 1978's Peter Gabriel 2/Scratch in On the Air and Exposure, before resurfacing on 1986's So via Red Rain and That Voice Again. Gabriel has explained that One By One stems from a "brain show" project he is developing, in which the character has been "torn apart" and is trying to "reassemble himself one piece at a time"; he said he had long wanted to revisit Mozo and decided to "give him another blast", bringing the character "back from the dead".
