Peter Gabriel has unveiled "One by One," a nearly 10-minute composition released as part of his ongoing album rollout strategy, which distributes new material throughout the year tied to lunar cycles. The track revives Mozo, a mythical character Gabriel originally introduced decades ago, and presents the figure attempting to rebuild itself piece by piece. Gabriel frames the song as addressing themes of human fragility and restoration, drawing parallels to Japanese kintsugi—the practice of repairing broken ceramics with gold to create objects more valuable than their original form.

Gabriel produced the work himself, incorporating orchestral arrangements, and paired it with cover art by sculptor David Altmejd, whose practice of deconstructing and reassembling imagery aligns with the song's philosophical core. Gabriel emphasizes the composition's length is intentional, designed to immerse listeners in a sustained narrative arc. The release includes a Bright-Side Mix by Mark Stent, with a Dark Side mix forthcoming at the next full moon.
