Pokémon Red & Blue mod transforms the RPG into a sick 3D voxel game

Polygon · 4 hours ago

A modder has released an overhaul for the original Pokémon Red and Blue games that reimagines the classic Game Boy RPG as a 3D voxel-style experience, drawing praise for how well retro pixel art translates into a three-dimensional world. The project follows recent interest in 3D pixel art aesthetics, such as the leaked Pokémon Diamond and Pearl documentary, and demonstrates an alternative to conventional remakes that simply modernise visuals wholesale.

The mod adds features including 60 frames-per-second performance, widescreen support, ambient occlusion, dynamic shadows and multiple camera angles, with battles rendered in 2.5D directly on the 3D map. Players can choose a full-colour look, an optional Animal Crossing-style curved world, or a filter replicating the original Game Boy's green monochrome palette, with shadow mapping and tilt-shift effects giving it a miniature diorama feel. Crucially, the project is not a ROM or emulator itself, requiring users to supply a verified US copy of Pokémon Red or Blue, which is used only during import before being released from memory; a nine-minute gameplay video shows the opening moments in Pallet Town.
