Jean-Pierre Dorléac, the French-born costume designer whose Emmy-winning work shaped the look of "Battlestar Galactica" and earned him an Oscar nomination for "Somewhere in Time," has died at 83. He passed away on 23 July at his home in the Hollywood Hills from natural causes, according to a family spokesperson who confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter. Dorléac spent decades as one of Hollywood's most respected costume designers, working across television and film from the late 1970s through the mid-2000s.

Born in Toulon in 1943, Dorléac trained at France's École des Beaux-Arts before relocating to the United States and breaking into Los Angeles theatre. He won two Emmy Awards, for 1978's "Battlestar Galactica" and the 1999-2001 series "The Lot," and received 11 Emmy nominations in total, including five for "Quantum Leap." His film credits included "The Blue Lagoon" and the Oscar-nominated "Somewhere in Time," both from 1980, while his final feature was 2004's "In Enemy Hands." He also wrote a novel and a 2015 memoir, and is survived by his spouse, Gilberto Mello.
