Zach Cregger has said his forthcoming Resident Evil film is the most violent work he has made, promising grotesque horror in keeping with the game series’ creature designs and brutality. The comments signal that the reboot will lean heavily into graphic survival horror, distinguishing it from a more restrained or purely action-led adaptation.

The film is written and directed by Cregger, whose previous films include Barbarian and Weapons, and stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier caught in the Raccoon City outbreak. It tells an original story running alongside the events of Resident Evil 2 rather than directly adapting its established characters, and is scheduled for release on 18 September 2026.
