Dr Bijoy Mondal, who migrated from Bangladesh in his mid-twenties, has concluded a six-decade NHS career at Rotherham Hospital at the age of 86. He established himself as the town's only specialist geriatric doctor, initially serving across multiple sites before the hospital opened in 1978, and later created community-based care initiatives that he credits with reducing unnecessary hospital admissions. Rather than retire at 65, he continued for over two decades and received recognition through the NHS 75 Award in 2023 for his sustained contribution.

Reflecting on his tenure, Dr Mondal observed that NHS performance has deteriorated in recent years but expressed hope for future improvement through reforms to social care funding and delivery. He highlighted the positive technological and pharmaceutical advances he witnessed during his career and defended his choice to remain in the UK against opportunities elsewhere, citing the NHS's principle of equitable access regardless of financial circumstances as fundamental to his commitment to the service.
