Fifa has now detailed the specific charges arising from its disciplinary proceedings against Argentina, confirming that midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three counts of assault and defender Nahuel Molina two counts of assault plus one of unsporting behaviour, stemming from the brawl that followed Argentina's extra-time defeat by Spain in the World Cup final. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala also faces an assault charge, while substitute Thiago Almada and Spain's Gavi face unsporting behaviour charges, broadening the case beyond the earlier-reported Falklands banner controversy to include named individuals and specific offences.

The proceedings originally began after several Argentina players, including Giovani Lo Celso, displayed a banner reading "the Malvinas are Argentinian" following their semi-final win over England in Atlanta, a reference to the British overseas territory over which the two countries fought a war in 1982 that killed more than 900 people. Fifa's charge sheet also cites discriminatory chants and gestures, late kick-offs, security breaches and objects thrown by spectators across several matches; the chaotic final-whistle scenes erupted at the New York New Jersey Stadium as Spain, 1-0 winners, tried to celebrate. Fifa said those charged have been given the chance to respond before its Disciplinary Committee issues a ruling.
