Sorry, haters. Ferrari’s first EV is doing just fine

TechCrunch · 3 hours ago

Ferrari's first electric vehicle, the Luce, has confounded critics who dismissed it as a flop when it was unveiled in May, with the automaker reportedly hitting its 2026 sales target within just two months. The reaction to the wedge-shaped, five-seat EV had been overwhelmingly negative, with detractors likening its styling to a Nissan Leaf and warning that cheaper Chinese rivals would outperform it, while Ferrari's shares fell 8% the day after the reveal. Instead, the car appears to have sold out its planned run quickly, suggesting armchair critics misjudged both the design and Ferrari's loyal customer base.

According to a Financial Times report, Ferrari aimed to sell just under 500 units of the €555,000 (around $630,000) Luce, largely designed by Jony Ive's studio LoveFrom, and at least a fifth are expected to go to Chinese buyers, a market that favours fast, sleek four-door EVs. TechCrunch has not yet had the figures confirmed directly by Ferrari. Analysts point to Ferrari's enthusiastic, price-insensitive fanbase, which bought more than 13,000 cars last year, as a key reason a practical model bearing the prancing horse badge could still sell well despite the design backlash, with early reviews suggesting it drives like a true Ferrari.

  • Ferrari's Luce EV hit its 2026 sales target in just two months.
  • Critics had mocked its design and predicted poor sales.
  • At least 20% of the €555,000 EVs are headed to China.
