The Traveling Wilburys, one of rock's most celebrated supergroups, came together almost entirely by chance in 1987. George Harrison needed to record a B-side track for his solo album Cloud Nine, and a chain of small coincidences – a full recording schedule, a forgotten guitar and a spare home studio – pulled together five major artists for what began as a one-off session.

Harrison enlisted Jeff Lynne to produce and invited Roy Orbison along, but found no studio available at short notice, so he borrowed Bob Dylan's home studio in Malibu, prompting Dylan to join the session too. A detour to collect a forgotten guitar led them to Tom Petty's house, and he was invited along as well. The five recorded "Handle With Care", named after a label on a box in the garage, and enjoyed the collaboration so much that it grew into the full Traveling Wilburys project.
