The July full Moon, known as the Buck Moon, was visible across the UK on Wednesday night, with skywatchers photographing it above locations including Windsor Castle and Cornwall. The event matters chiefly as a seasonal astronomical sight, marking the second of meteorological summer’s three full Moons.

The Moon reached peak fullness at 15:36 BST, becoming visible after nightfall and at times appearing orange. Its name refers to the period when male deer grow new antlers, while it is also called the Thunder Moon because July often brings storms. The next full Moon, the Sturgeon Moon, is due on 28 August, before meteorological autumn begins on 1 September.
