Cinemark and Marcus Theatres reported stronger second-quarter results as cinema attendance and spending recovered, supported by a broader slate of successful films. The figures suggest the box office rebound is reaching beyond the largest chains, with both operators benefiting from higher ticket and concession sales and forecasting continued momentum through the year.
Cinemark’s revenue rose 15% to $1.1 billion, while net income increased from $94 million to $139 million and earnings per share reached $1.19. It generated record worldwide admissions revenue of $540 million and concession revenue of $433 million; Marcus Theatres’ revenue rose 14% to $151 million and operating income increased 70% to $27 million, helped by films including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael and Toy Story 5.
- Cinemark passed $1 billion in quarterly revenue as cinema demand strengthened.
- Marcus reported higher revenue and sharply increased operating income.
- Both chains expect upcoming releases to sustain the recovery.

Cinema chains earn most of their money from ticket sales, food and drink, and advertising shown in cinemas. The industry was badly affected when venues closed during the Covid-19 pandemic and when fewer major films were released afterwards, leaving many operators with high costs and debt.
Cinemark is one of the largest cinema groups in the United States and also operates in several Latin American countries. Marcus Theatres is a smaller US operator, mainly serving communities in the Midwest, while the biggest rival chains include AMC and Regal.
A recovery in cinema-going depends heavily on studios providing a steady run of films that audiences want to see on large screens. Results from both large and smaller operators are watched as an indication of whether demand is returning across the wider cinema business, rather than being limited to a few major locations or individual blockbuster releases.
