Expensive phone cases: When and why it’s worth paying more

Engadget · 4 hours ago

As smartphones become more expensive and central to daily life, a protective case can be worthwhile insurance against damage and data loss. The article argues that paying more is justified only when it buys genuinely protective construction, useful features or more sustainable materials, rather than simply a premium appearance.

Effective cases generally use flexible, impact-absorbing materials such as TPU or silicone, which can provide strong protection from around $20. Buyers should look for a close fit, raised edges around screens and cameras, and reinforced air-cushioned corners; eco-friendly materials and features such as MagSafe-compatible magnetic rings can increase the cost, while rigid wood or metal cases may offer little drop protection.

  • Good protection need not cost more than about $20.
  • Prioritise flexible materials, raised lips and reinforced corners.
  • Pay extra only for useful features or sustainability.
