The Football Association will raise the standard minimum suspension for racism and other discriminatory behaviour from six to 10 matches from the start of the new season. The move is intended to strengthen deterrence against conduct the FA says remains a problem throughout football, including at grassroots level.

The rule applies to players and other participants found guilty of aggravated improper-conduct breaches involving protected characteristics. In 2025-26, 10 people received bans of six to nine matches; shorter bans under the new rules will require mitigating factors and a guilty plea, while repeat offenders could face suspensions exceeding a year. Written or online-only offences may still attract bans as low as three matches where mitigation is accepted.
