Virtual Boy Cardboard Model Gets A Limited-Time Discount In Select Locations

Nintendo Life · 2 months ago

Nintendo has reduced the price of its cardboard Virtual Boy headset in Australia, New Zealand and Japan for a limited period. The offer coincides with the upcoming addition of two previously unreleased Virtual Boy games to Nintendo Classics, making the accessory cheaper for players wanting the intended stereoscopic experience.

In Australia and New Zealand, the cardboard unit costs A$19.95 rather than A$29.95 until 17 August 2026, excluding shipping; in Japan, it has fallen from ¥2,980 to ¥1,980 for the same period. Virtual Boy games can also be played on Switch or Switch 2 without the headset, but require a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription; Zero Racers and D-Hopper arrive next week alongside a screen-colour option.

  • Cardboard Virtual Boy headsets are discounted in selected regions until 17 August.
  • Australia and New Zealand price falls to A$19.95.
  • Two unreleased Virtual Boy games join Nintendo Classics next week.

Nintendo’s Virtual Boy was a short-lived Nintendo console released in the mid-1990s. It used a headset-like display to create a three-dimensional effect, but its limited game library and unusual design meant it was discontinued within a year.

Nintendo now offers some Virtual Boy games through Nintendo Classics, a collection available to subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. They can be played on a Switch or Switch 2 screen, but the cardboard accessory is designed to hold the console and recreate the original stereoscopic view.

The newly added games, Zero Racers and D-Hopper, were developed for Virtual Boy but were not released at the time. Their arrival expands the small catalogue and gives subscribers another way to experience games from one of Nintendo’s least commercially successful systems.
