Uefa has said it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s leadership of Fifa, escalating the dispute after Fifa withdrew its proposal to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors. It welcomed the decision as a victory for football but said rebuilding trust in Fifa must now begin, accusing Infantino of breaking earlier promises on transparency and using funds for football’s development.

The plan, reported this week, prompted Uefa to vote to boycott World Cups if it went ahead, arguing the tournament should not be treated as an investment product. Concacaf rejected the proposal and the Asian Football Confederation backed Uefa and Concacaf; Fifa’s chief operating officer said the administration had been deceived, while senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resigned, calling it a bad deal that could mortgage football’s future.

  • Uefa says it no longer trusts Fifa’s leadership.
  • Fifa withdrew its proposed private-investment deal.
  • Other confederations also opposed the plan.
