Brentford sign Sangare for club record fee

BBC Sport ·

Brentford have signed Mali midfielder Mamadou Sangare from Lens for a club-record fee, underlining the Premier League club’s investment in strengthening their midfield. The 24-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with an option for a further year after an impressive season in France and an increasing role for his national side.

Although the fee was not disclosed, Brentford said it exceeded the £42.5m they paid Bournemouth for Dango Ouattara last summer. Sangare made 33 appearances as Lens finished second in Ligue 1 and won the Coupe de France, while he has earned 16 Mali caps and appeared at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Brentford are a west London football club who play in the Premier League, England’s top division. Lens are a French club in Ligue 1, the country’s top division, where Mamadou Sangare played before moving to England.

Sangare is a Mali international midfielder, a player whose role is to link defence and attack and help control possession. His move follows a strong season with Lens, who finished second in Ligue 1 and won the Coupe de France, and adds to Brentford’s options in midfield.

The reported fee is a club record for Brentford, meaning they have spent more on Sangare than on any previous signing. It signals a substantial investment in the squad, while his performances for Lens and Mali help explain why he has attracted the club’s interest.
