Liverpool ended their pre-season tour of the United States with a 4-2 defeat by Leeds United, giving manager Andoni Iraola much to consider before the new season. His side produced arguably their best 45 minutes of his tenure in the first half, but collapsed after the break, conceding four goals without reply inside 25 minutes, exposing worrying weaknesses in squad depth, physicality and set-piece defending.

Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, whose transfers cost a combined £225m, both impressed on their return in the first half, with Wirtz on the scoresheet and Luke Chambers opening the scoring early on. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai admitted two goals conceded from set-pieces need fixing, while an inexperienced Liverpool backline, including Calvin Ramsay, struggled badly after Iraola made wholesale changes at half-time. Iraola is due to reunite with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Alisson Becker and new signing Victor Munoz in the coming days, with only Alexis Mac Allister still absent, though the club have made no new signings during the American tour so far.
