Phil Collins has revealed he suffered life-threatening alcoholism after stopping Antabuse, a medication that induces illness if alcohol is consumed, which he had previously used to control an earlier drinking problem. Speaking to the Sunday Times, the 75-year-old former Genesis frontman said his renewed drinking led to a seven-month hospital stay from November 2023 with severe damage to his pancreas and kidneys, during which doctors and family considered whether to keep him on life support. The disclosure adds detail to a series of health struggles that have overshadowed his final years as a performer, including the physical toll that ended his drumming career.

Collins said his organs were "seizing up" and that people close to him came to say goodbye, though he has no memory of those visits; he has not had a drink since recovering. He previously described a separate bout of alcohol abuse following his 2006 divorce from third wife Orianne Cevey. Collins, one of Britain's most successful musicians with five UK No 1 albums as Genesis frontman and four more as a solo artist, has also battled neck and spine problems requiring surgery, which confined him to vocals-only during Genesis's 2021 reunion tour, alongside a 2016 diabetes diagnosis.
