Serj Tankian suggests System of a Down bandmate John Dolmayan is no longer a Donald Trump supporter

Far Out ·

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has suggested that bandmate John Dolmayan may no longer support Donald Trump, walking back the outspoken political stance Dolmayan had previously held. Speaking to Rolling Stone Italy about his 2024 memoir, in which he described Dolmayan as a Trump supporter, Tankian said the correct tense was "was" rather than "is," noting that he believed Dolmayan had "got tired of Trump, like many others." The remarks are notable given the pair's long-standing political divide, which Tankian has previously called "frustrating" despite the two being closely bonded as brothers-in-law with children who are cousins.

Tankian pointed out that Dolmayan had voted for Barack Obama before later backing Trump, and suggested many Armenians in Los Angeles who voted for Trump "now regret it." He also linked Trump's rise to declining US investment in education since the Reagan era, and noted that Trump's approval rating has fallen to a record low of -25 according to The Economist, amid fallout from the Iran conflict. The comments come as System of a Down, having just finished their European tour, prepare for a run of 2027 stadium shows in Australia and New Zealand alongside Faith No More.
