Mauricio Pochettino has agreed a contract extension with the US Soccer Federation that will keep him as head coach of the men's national team through the 2030 World Cup. The two sides had been discussing an extension for months before the USMNT's disappointing last-16 exit at this summer's World Cup, with the federation keen to retain him, and talks intensified in the weeks following the tournament.

Financial terms have not been disclosed, but Pochettino is expected to receive a raise on his previous $6m annual salary, already the largest package paid to a US head coach, with hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin again the primary backer of the deal. Under the new "expanded role", Pochettino and his staff will focus on the senior team while also advising on the wider national team pathway, youth soccer, coaching education and league collaboration. His tenure so far has included a standout 4-1 win over Paraguay but ended in a heavy 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the last 16, and he has had public disagreements with some players, notably Christian Pulisic, and tensions with the media.
