Lucy Dacus has released a stripped-back acoustic cover of "Clay Pigeons" ahead of "Sittin' With Blaze", a tribute album honouring the late outlaw country songwriter Blaze Foley, due out on 7 August. The compilation features contributions from artists including Phosphorescent, Lucinda Williams, Willie Watson and Riley Downing, marking a broader celebration of Foley's influence on Texan and American folk music decades after his death.

Speaking to Apple Music 1's Matt Wilkinson, Dacus explained she discovered the song through a friend and was immediately struck by it, calling it "one of the best songs ever written." The track, also previously covered by John Prine and Michael Cera, appealed to her for its ambiguity about whether its narrator is fleeing life or searching for a fresh start. Foley, who helped shape the Austin songwriting scene in the 1970s and wrote tracks such as "If I Could Only Fly," was shot dead in 1989 aged 39; his story was later dramatised in Ethan Hawke's 2018 film "Blaze."
