The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its 2027 Costume Institute spring exhibition, and the accompanying Met Gala, will be dedicated to designer John Galliano, a choice likely to prove divisive given his history. Vogue's Anna Wintour, who confirmed the theme, said the show would examine Galliano's full career, including "the darkness in John's past", rather than avoid it, describing him as one of fashion's most significant creative figures across Dior, Givenchy, Margiela and his own label.

The announcement comes roughly 15 years after Galliano was convicted of hate crimes in Paris after making antisemitic remarks, including expressing admiration for Hitler, and was subsequently fined and dismissed as Dior's creative director; he later issued a public apology. The 2027 tribute will make him only the third living designer honoured with a solo Met exhibition, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017. Co-chairs for next year's gala have not yet been named, following 2026's event, themed "Costume Art" and led by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Wintour, which featured performances and appearances from stars including Sabrina Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry and Charli xcx.
