Sony Pictures CEO Jabs Anti-Theater Sentiment as Spider-Man: Brand New Day Breaks Box Office Records
Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has hailed the record-breaking box office performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day as proof that cinema remains vital, pushing back against suggestions that streaming has made theatrical releases obsolete. Speaking to Variety following the film's opening weekend, Rothman said the response showed Spider-Man "uniting people across cultures and ages" and dismissed those who doubt the value of theatrical releases, calling the film's success "miraculous".
The film overtook Avengers: Endgame to earn $360 million domestically, and posted the second-highest global opening of all time at $932 million, behind only Endgame's $1.223 billion in 2019. Rothman also addressed speculation over whether Tom Holland would continue as Spider-Man, saying he could not yet confirm this but was hopeful, while acknowledging a sequel with Holland remains possible. The film will expand into IMAX cinemas from 7 August, alongside Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, as both titles extend their large-format runs into mid-September.
