"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has opened at the top of the U.K. and Ireland box office with £36.4 million ($48.9 million), marking the third-highest opening weekend in U.K. cinema history. The Sony superhero film's blockbuster launch underscores continued strong demand for major franchise releases in British cinemas, even as it fell short of records set by "Avengers: Endgame" and "Spectre".

Over its pure three-day weekend, the film took $31.5 million from 716 locations, a $44,056 site average, making it the fourth-biggest weekend launch ever behind "Endgame", "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and the final "Harry Potter" film. Elsewhere in the chart, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" held second place with $9.1 million in its third weekend (cumulative $67.7 million), while Pixar's "Toy Story 5" took third with $69.7 million banked over seven weeks. "Minions & Monsters" and "Moana" rounded out the top five, and new entries "Ish" and "Jana Nayagan" appeared further down the list.
