A van driver has been given a suspended prison sentence after causing the death of a cyclist in North Yorkshire in a crash that left him with "no idea" how he had failed to see the victim. Robert Wade, 25, struck Graham Nash, 54, on the A65 Settle bypass in August 2024, and Nash died at the scene after suffering a cardiac arrest, despite Wade stopping to attempt CPR. The case highlights how a moment's inattention on the road, even without alcohol, drugs or phone use involved, can have fatal consequences.

Wade, of Silkstone, Barnsley, was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, alongside 200 hours of unpaid work and a three-year driving ban. The court heard Nash had been clearly visible, wearing a lit helmet and with a rear light on his bike, and that Wade had eight or nine seconds in which he could have seen him. Nash's widow, Linda, described him as "one of a kind", while his sister Louise said the family would miss him "every day for the rest of our lives"; Wade, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty and was said to have shown extreme remorse.
