A man has been jailed for an extended sentence after burgling and sexually assaulting a 94-year-old woman in her Doncaster home, an attack that left her too frightened ever to return there before she died earlier this year. Tyler Clarke, 25, pleaded guilty to burglary and sexual assault at Sheffield Crown Court, with police describing the crime as a "horrific and wicked" assault on a vulnerable pensioner that permanently changed her life.

Clarke was traced after fingerprints found on furniture in the victim, Sheila Wood's, home matched forensic samples taken from her following the December burglary. Officers also recovered a hat resembling clothing seen in CCTV footage from the time, and later found Clarke hiding in a wardrobe during a raid in Balby, Doncaster. He was given an extended sentence of 18 years and six months, while Wood's family paid tribute to her as "the brightest beacon of light" and said the attack had stolen her home, independence and peace of mind.
