SUFC News: Blades in line for bonus cash windfall as transfer edges closer – thestar.co.uk

Sheffield United are set for a modest financial boost after learning they hold a residual stake in Ben Whiteman's impending £3 million transfer from Preston North End to Wrexham. The Blades had already collected the bulk of their sell-on fee when the midfielder left Bramall Lane for Preston in 2021, but sources at the club have confirmed a further "small bonus top-up" will be triggered once the Wrexham move is finalised, thanks to a sell-on clause written into that original deal.

Whiteman, 30, came through Sheffield United's academy having originally been a Manchester United trainee, and his exit from Preston has not been entirely smooth. Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom said the player forced the issue by pushing for a move, remarking "Ben knew there was a line I didn't want him to cross and unfortunately he has," adding he was "not bothered" as long as a replacement is found. Doncaster Rovers, who originally sold Whiteman to Preston and inserted their own sell-on clause into that chain, will also receive a payment once the Wrexham transfer is completed.
