Koei Tecmo is putting out an “AI chat RPG” based on the Atelier Ryza series, and it sounds bleak

Polygon · 4 hours ago

Koei Tecmo's studio Gust, together with Japanese AI startup SpiralAI, has announced RyzaChat: Your Midsummer Dream Story with AI Ryza, an "AI chat RPG" for iOS and Android built around conversations with a chatbot version of Atelier Ryza protagonist Ryza. The game's core mechanics, including quests, exploration and progression, are driven by AI-generated dialogue rather than a traditional scripted narrative, raising concerns about the quality and direction of the experience as well as broader worries about players becoming emotionally attached to AI companions.

Players begin by messaging Ryza to help build a boat and leave Kurken Island, unlocking a world map with AI-generated quests covering exploration, combat, synthesis and construction, alongside a Chat Mode where Ryza responds with different expressions and gestures. SpiralAI, maker of the Geppetto2 language model, says it has built in "responsible AI" safeguards: no AI-generated video or images, human-made artwork and visuals, voice synthesis based on actress Yuri Noguchi's recordings, and royalty-sharing with illustrators, voice actors and IP holders. Critics note these measures don't address concerns about players forming unhealthy attachments to a character already heavily sexualised in marketing, nor the track record of AI-chat games, including a similar Ubisoft experiment, generally lacking coherent, human-crafted storytelling.
