The 2026-27 Irish League season is set to begin on schedule this weekend after Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) member clubs overwhelmingly backed three restructuring proposals at an extraordinary general meeting on Tuesday night. The vote had been in doubt after Banbridge Town successfully challenged the league's plans through the Irish FA's appeals committee, which ruled that NIFL had acted unlawfully by not securing prior member approval for its new competition structure, raising the risk of a delayed start.

The EGM needed 90% of the 47 member clubs to attend for it to proceed, a threshold that was met despite uncertainty earlier in the day, and the proposals then passed comfortably above the required 75% approval. As a result, the Premiership and Championship seasons kick off as planned, with Cliftonville hosting Crusaders on Friday and Strabane Athletic facing Institute in the second tier. The restructuring sees NIFL cede control of the third tier to a new 12-team Conference League run by the Northern Amateur Football League, with the Championship expanding from 12 to 16 teams; Banbridge Town, who finished bottom of the old Premier Intermediate League, are among 10 clubs moving into the new Conference League.
