Netflix's 2019 anthology series *Love, Death & Robots* is being held up as a benchmark for Apple TV's forthcoming adaptation of *Neuromancer*, William Gibson's landmark cyberpunk novel, which is due to launch on 22 January 2027. The comparison matters because cyberpunk has proved a difficult genre for studios to translate successfully to screen in recent years, and *Neuromancer* carries the weight of adapting one of the genre's most influential texts, making a strong recent example of the style worth revisiting.

*Love, Death & Robots*, a four-part animated anthology, grew out of David Fincher's long-unrealised plan to reboot the 1981 cyberpunk anthology film *Heavy Metal*. Fincher developed the project with Tim Miller, founder of visual effects studio Blur Studios, repurposing their earlier work into the Netflix series, which premiered on 19 March 2019. It gave animators and writers from around the world the freedom to experiment with cyberpunk themes and ideas about technology and artificial life, and is now cited as a high bar for genre ambition ahead of *Neuromancer*'s release.
