Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region on 5 August 2026, killing 17 people and wounding 44 others. The strike targeted civilian and logistics infrastructure and comes amid an intensifying summer campaign of Russian ballistic missile attacks, which Ukrainian officials say is being enabled by critical shortages of Western-supplied interceptor ammunition.

The assault involved 24 ballistic missiles, four hypersonic Zircon or supersonic Oniks missiles, and 115 drones, many of them jet-powered. Sites hit included a railway station, a brewing company, building materials warehouses, a Nova Poshta parcel sorting centre and Epicentr retail facilities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said interceptor missiles "could have saved lives today", pointing to shortages affecting US-made Patriot air defence systems, while an adviser said the war had entered a phase in which Russia is "attacking everything indiscriminately." Russia's defence ministry claimed it had targeted military-linked logistics and transport hubs, alleging some sites stored drone components or dual-use goods for arms production.
