Why are Arsenal signing Newcastle captain Guimaraes?

BBC Sport ·

Arsenal are moving to sign Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes as manager Mikel Arteta looks to push the club to a "different dimension" after winning last season's Premier League title. Arteta values Guimaraes' top-flight experience, leadership qualities and durability, all seen as key to strengthening a midfield that suffered badly from injuries and heavy squad demands last season despite a £250m summer outlay.

The 28-year-old Brazilian, who became Newcastle's talisman since joining in 2022, has missed just 16 Premier League games in that time and was the club's top league scorer last season with nine goals and four assists. Data shows Newcastle perform significantly better with him in the side, and he would join an Arsenal midfield already featuring Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, captain Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, adding depth and quality as Arteta targets sustained success on multiple fronts.

  • Arteta wants durability and leadership after an injury-hit title-winning season.
  • Guimaraes scored nine goals last season and rarely misses matches through injury.

Bruno Guimaraes is a Brazilian midfielder who joined Newcastle United in 2022 and became the team’s captain and a central figure. He contributes both to defending and attacking, and has played regularly in the Premier League.

Arsenal are managed by Mikel Arteta and won the league title last season. Their midfield already includes several established players, but injuries and a demanding schedule tested the squad’s depth.

A move would add another experienced option as Arsenal seek to compete across several competitions. Guimaraes’s importance to Newcastle means his departure could also affect the side he leaves.
