Fears for Mitch McConnell, 84, increase after 47 missed votes… and no sighting of the hospitalized Republican

Daily Mail ·

Concerns are mounting over the health of Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, 84, who has not been seen in public or issued any video statement since falling at his Washington DC home on 14 June. He has now missed 47 consecutive Senate roll-call votes, and the absence of a live appearance has fuelled speculation among commentators and journalists that his condition may be worse than officials have disclosed, with some questioning whether recently released photographs are outdated or manipulated.

McConnell's office has issued written updates, including one on 27 July stating he was undergoing "intense physical therapy" at a rehab facility, accompanied by photos with his wife Elaine Chao, but has not responded to requests for comment from the Daily Mail or several independent journalists. Fellow Republicans, including Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Scott Jennings, say they have spoken to him by phone or heard he is "clear-minded," but Kentucky's Democratic Governor Andy Beshear has urged McConnell to either prove he can serve or resign; complicating matters, Kentucky law would require a special election rather than a gubernatorial appointment to replace him. McConnell, who has had prior health scares including freezing episodes in 2023, is already due to retire when his term ends in January.
