Onimusha: Way of the Sword Preview Teases More Capcom 2026 Domination
Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
Onimusha: Way of the Sword appears to be a substantial reinvention of Capcom’s long-running samurai series, moving away from the fixed-camera survival-horror style of its PlayStation 2 predecessors towards modern third-person action. A two-hour demo suggests that demanding boss fights remain central, while more open mission areas and extensive character progression could give the series a fresh direction ahead of its September release.
The preview included a linear opening level featuring environmental hazards, light puzzles and a two-phase battle against the Genma Daidara, with blocking described as essential to success. A later village area allowed objectives to be tackled in any order, alongside treasure hunting, optional fights and villager rescues, although repeated encounters reduced the sense of a living world. Resources can improve stats, charms and equipment, while a large skill tree comparable to God of War unlocks additional moves.
- Onimusha shifts towards modern third-person action.
- Boss battles and blocking remain crucial.
- Open areas add exploration and RPG progression.

Onimusha is a Capcom video game series set in a fictional version of Japan’s feudal era. Its stories usually follow swordsmen fighting the Genma, demonic enemies inspired by Japanese folklore, using swords and supernatural powers.
The original games became known in the early 2000s for combining action, exploration, puzzles and tense combat. They used fixed camera angles, meaning players viewed scenes from set positions rather than freely moving the camera.
Capcom is the Japanese company behind series including Resident Evil, Street Fighter and Monster Hunter. A new Onimusha game matters because it is reviving a long-dormant series while adapting it to the kind of larger, third-person action games now common on modern consoles.
