Autlook Boards Barbara Kopple’s ‘Union Town’ Ahead of Venice Premiere (EXCLUSIVE)
Sales company Autlook Filmsales has acquired global distribution rights to "Union Town," a new documentary by two-time Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple, ahead of its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The film will screen in the Venice Open section before moving on to a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, extending Kopple's decades-long focus on labour and working-class struggles to a new generation of audiences.
"Union Town" spent three years following essential workers in New York City's last-mile delivery sector, including staff at UPS and Amazon and the largely immigrant app-based bike courier workforce, against a backdrop of renewed union organising in the city. Autlook also picked up rights (excluding North America, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland) to Kopple's two Oscar-winning classics, "Harlan County USA" (1976) and "American Dream" (1990), both recently re-released in 4K by Janus Films. The documentary is produced by Kopple, Hannes Hosp and Peter Palandjian, with Palandjian and Glenn Rigberg as executive producers.
