‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Scores Biggest First Week in Box Office History
Sony's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has broken the record for the biggest first week in domestic box office history, taking over $500 million in North America within seven days. This is the fastest any film has reached that milestone, overtaking "Avengers: Endgame", which previously held the record after eight days in April 2019. The film's rapid succession of records underlines the enduring drawing power of Tom Holland and Zendaya as leads and cements the movie as a major commercial success for Sony and Marvel Studios.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and made on a $225 million budget, the film also set records for its Thursday preview takings, its Friday domestic haul and the best-ever domestic Monday and Tuesday totals, while giving Sony its biggest opening weekend ever with $360 million, narrowly beating "Endgame's" $357.1 million. It became the second-fastest film to reach $1 billion globally, taking six days, again behind only "Endgame". Sony chief Tom Rothman credited the success to the genuine talent and popularity of stars Holland and Zendaya, and the studio expects strong takings to continue as the film heads into its second weekend against new releases including "One Night Only", "Super Troopers 3" and "Ice Cream Man".
In short
- "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" set the record for biggest domestic first week ever
- Film topped $500m in North America in just seven days, beating "Avengers: Endgame"
- Also had record opening weekend ($360m) and reached $1bn globally in six days
Explained simply
Spider-Man is a Marvel superhero whose stories have been adapted for cinema by Sony, with Marvel Studios also involved in this film. Tom Holland plays Peter Parker, the young man behind the mask, and Zendaya plays MJ, one of the central characters in his life. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
Big cinema releases earn much of their money in their first days, when audiences turn out for opening screenings. Their ticket sales are tracked in North America and worldwide, and records can be compared with earlier hits such as Avengers: Endgame. Box office results matter to studios because they help show how audiences are responding and how a film is performing against its production costs.
