A New Mexico court has ordered Meta to pay a further $567 million after finding its platforms significantly contributed to a teen mental-health crisis in the state. The ruling treats Meta’s services as a public nuisance and adds to pressure on social-media companies to account for alleged harms to young users.

The money will fund awareness, prevention, screening and treatment services for people harmed by Meta’s platforms. It follows $375 million in civil penalties from an earlier phase of the case, taking the total to $942 million; Meta disputes the decision and says it will appeal.
