Rare chocolate box sells for double guide price
A rare solid silver Rowntree’s chocolate box made for King Edward VII’s 1902 coronation sold for £1,700 at a Scarborough auction, double its £800–£1,000 guide price. The sale highlights the strong collector demand for objects combining royal associations, historic manufacturing and extreme rarity.
The box originally held a single bar of Rowntree’s chocolate and was presented to the King and Queen and members of the Rowntree family. Made by Sheffield silversmiths Cooper Brothers and Sons, it is believed to be only the second example offered for sale this century; the winning bidder was from Hull, with competing interest from Japan, Cyprus and elsewhere.
