A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta to pay $567 million to address harm to young people linked to Facebook and Instagram, following a state case over child safety and mental health. The ruling matters because it also requires platform changes for New Mexico users, potentially offering a model for further legal action against social-media companies.

The payment is additional to $375 million in civil penalties imposed by a jury in March, bringing Meta’s total liability in the case to $942 million. The jury found that Meta knowingly harmed children’s mental health and concealed information about child sexual exploitation; the new order includes stronger age-assurance measures and a reporting route for schools or child-safety groups to flag suspected under-13 accounts.
