Watch Sturgill Simpson Shred With Black Keys in Nashville
Sturgill Simpson made an unannounced guest appearance with the Black Keys at their Nashville show, joining them for a lengthy cover of Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”. The performance closed the North American leg of the band’s Peaches n’ Kream tour and highlighted Simpson’s connection to Nashville’s current rock and roots-music scene.
Simpson, playing a cherry Gibson guitar, helped turn the song into a nearly seven-minute psychedelic blues jam at the Pinnacle. The Black Keys also brought out Marcus King, while Simpson’s recent Mutiny After Midnight album was recorded at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studios; it reached number three on the Billboard 200 after initially being sold only in physical formats. Simpson’s Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds will begin its Mutiny for the Masses tour in Austin on 4 September.
