Los Angeles digital country singer-songwriter Deloyd Elze has released a cover of Ry Cooder’s “Drive Like I Never Been Hurt” as the additional track on an expanded edition of his EP Nellene. The release highlights Cooder’s continued influence on younger artists and fits Elze’s experimental country style, retaining the original’s distinctive mariachi-inspired brass.

Elze, born Jacob Henry Allen, was previously named a Stereogum Artist To Watch for his early releases, including Nellene. The original song appeared on Cooder’s 2008 concept album I, Flathead: The Songs Of Kash Buk And The Klowns; Allen said he was drawn to its drum groove, humorous yet affecting lyrics and unconventional production after a friend mistook it for one of his own songs. Nellene (Extended) is out now via Concord.
