Robert Plant made an unannounced appearance at a junior charity chess tournament in Bewdley, Worcestershire, where he challenged 17-year-old local player George Walker. Walker won after Plant resigned because he had to leave, giving the teenager an unexpected encounter with one of his favourite musicians and adding attention to the event.

The Led Zeppelin singer attended the Worcestershire Junior Chess Congress on 1 August to support the mayor’s charity tournament. Organisers had not publicised his possible attendance, and Kidderminster Chess Club’s John Wrench said his presence brought prestige, though some younger competitors did not initially recognise him.
