New Lord of the Rings Release Officially Explores Sauron’s Forgotten Werewolf History
The Lord of the Rings Online is set to explore a lesser-known part of Sauron’s history in its forthcoming The Wolves of Mordor expansion. The story draws on Tolkien’s First Age lore, when Sauron ruled Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves, offering players a different perspective on Mordor beyond its familiar volcanic and Orc-held settings.
The expansion is due in autumn 2026, although developer Standing Stone has not announced a precise release date. Players will visit three north-eastern Mordor regions—Heledhris, Parth Rhavas and Nan Ogol—whose landscapes and stories reflect Sauron’s legacy; the narrative references his werewolf host, Draugluin, and his defeat by the hound Huan.
