Ars Technica · 17 hours ago

Bethesda has released “Dawn of the Machine”, a free new campaign chapter for the remastered Quake to mark the original game’s 30th anniversary. Developed by MachineGames’ informal “Quake Club” in collaboration with id Software, it expands a classic shooter with more ambitious map design and modern gameplay ideas, showing continued official support for older PC games.

The pack contains 19 levels, new music, and several enemy and weapon variants. Its campaign uses time loops, shifting environments, unlockable rune-gated routes, and persistent health and ammunition upgrades; it is available to existing Quake owners on Steam and current and previous-generation PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles. The release comes amid reported layoffs at id Software during Microsoft’s wider Xbox reorganisation, although MachineGames has been the main source of recent Quake content.
